Major Regeneration of Historic Guildhall Theatre Set to Begin This Autumn
Exciting plans to restore and revitalise the historic Guildhall Theatre are progressing, with work expected to begin as early as this autumn.
The ambitious regeneration project will see the theatre – believed to be the oldest working theatre in the UK – sensitively transformed into a vibrant cultural hub for King’s Lynn and West Norfolk. The redevelopment will preserve the building’s remarkable heritage while bringing it up to modern standards, ensuring it can be enjoyed by future generations.
The proposed works include essential repairs to the building’s structure, upgrades to its stage and seating, improved accessibility throughout, and the creation of enhanced backstage and front-of-house facilities. There are also plans to better integrate the Guildhall with the surrounding heritage buildings and public spaces, helping to draw more visitors to the area.
This transformational project is part of a broader vision for the King’s Lynn town centre, supported by funding from the Town Deal. It aims to celebrate the town’s cultural heritage, boost the local economy, and provide a dynamic space for performances, events, and community use.
Subject to final approvals, construction is expected to begin in autumn 2025, with the theatre reopening in 2027.
